An expert committee investigating recent heart attack fatalities in Karnataka has concluded that there is no correlation between premature cardiovascular disease and either COVID-19 infection or vaccination.


According to a report presented by the panel, COVID-19 vaccination has proven to be protective against long-term heart attack occurrences.


In response to over 20 heart attack deaths in Hassan district, the state government formed a specialized committee led by Dr. Ravindranath, the director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.


Findings of the Report

The report submitted to the government on July 2 indicates that current data does not support the notion that prolonged COVID-19 is responsible for the rise in sudden heart attacks among the youth.


It states, 'Rather, the increasing prevalence of common risk factors for heart disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and lipid imbalance, could be a more plausible explanation for the surge in sudden heart attack incidents.'


Observational Study Insights

The report also mentions, 'An observational study conducted at Jayadeva Hospital found no link between premature heart disease and prior COVID-19 infection or vaccination history.'


Furthermore, it notes, 'Most studies and reports published globally have also found no connection between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden heart attack occurrences, instead indicating that vaccination offers long-term protection against heart-related diseases.'


Government's Response and Broader Implications

Recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suggested that the heart attack deaths in Hassan district might be linked to COVID-19 vaccination, claiming that the vaccines were approved in a 'hasty' manner.


According to the panel's findings, there is no single cause for the increase in sudden heart attack fatalities; rather, multiple factors, including practical, genetic, and environmental risks, may contribute.
